    Country briefs of the regulatory frameworks governing migrant workers in the Arab States

    The country briefs map the key legal provisions dealing with migrant workers in eight Arab countries, summarizing the legal rules about who pays for recruitment, whether passport confiscation is prohibited by law, minimum working conditions including wages, working hours and rest periods, how to lodge grievances, and brief details of each country’s sponsorship regime.

    Multi-regional Trade Union Dialogue and Cooperation: Reinforcing Commitment and Fostering Action for Migrant Workers’ Rights

    As a follow-up to the commitment of the six regional trade union confederations to defend, protect and promote the rights of migrant workers, this multi-regional trade union dialogue on labour migration identified good practices in implementation and developed a concrete plan of action for trade union collaboration going forward.

    FAIRWAY Migrant Resource Center Symposium

    The International Labour Organization (ILO), through the FAIRWAY programme convened a symposium on Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs) that brought together participants from three African countries of origin: Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria. The central theme of the symposium revolved around enhancing the effectiveness of MRCs in providing access to information and essential services for both potential and in-service migrant workers, as well as the families they leave behind.

    Africa Labour Migration Conference

    The ILO and the African Union Commission, in collaboration with IOE and ITUC Africa held the African Countries Labour Migration Conference in October in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The Dialogue among African countries focussed on fostering cooperation and consensus building on labour migration governance and the protection of African migrant workers. SDC through the FAIRWAY project was a key funder for the conference

    Virtually Bridging Boundaries: Ushering a new era of cross-border labour migration reporting

    This webinar organized by the FAIRWAY Programme welcomed students and lecturers from universities in Uganda and Jordan, and professionals journalists around the world, to share their experiences on cross-border journalism.

    Journalists and students in Kuwait benefit from awareness raising and capacity building activities on labour migration reporting

    The FAIRWAY Programme organized a week-long engagement with professional journalists and students from different universities to enhance their knowledge and skills related on the topic of labour migration in Kuwait.

    Workshop with GCC governments promotes a rights-based approach to employment contract termination for migrant workers in the Gulf

    The ILO, together with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UN Women and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the GCC Executive Bureau co-hosted a workshop with representatives of the six GCC governments (United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar and State of Kuwait) to discuss legislation, policies, reforms, good practices and remaining challenges in addressing issues around ‘unexplained absences’ from the workplace.

    Migrants Rights Protection Improved through Strengthening Capacity and Knowledge Management of Migrant Resources Centres in Nigeria

    Between September and October 2023, the Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs) managed by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment (FMLE) conducted Training of Trainers workshops for staff of the Centres in the areas of Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars (PDOS) and gender mainstreaming.

    ILO FAIRWAY Programme and en.v tackle complex attitudes of employers of domestic workers through experimental project

    17 October 2023

    From February to June 2023, FAIRWAY piloted the creation of the Women’s Circle project in Kuwait – an experimental, community-led project designed by en.v, which focussed on shifting mindsets of Kuwaiti female employers of domestic workers, through facilitated dialogue.
