Promotion of Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone

This project contributes to the socio-economic development of Jordan by promoting social justice and expanding decent work opportunities through better compliance with fundamental principles and rights at work and the enforcement of national labour legislation.

Summary

This project contributes to the socio-economic development of Jordan by promoting social justice and expanding decent work opportunities through better compliance with fundamental principles and rights at work and the enforcement of national labour legislation. It provides technical assistance to government, worker and employer representatives to reinvigorate the labour inspection system and to promote collective bargaining and workplace cooperation in the Aqaba Zone.

Objectives

  • Strengthen and modernize the labour inspection system and empower staff in performing labour inspection tasks.
  • Enable tripartite constituents in the Aqaba Zone to acquire skills and tools that enable them to promote and realize sound industrial relations and collective bargaining.

Main Activities

  • Support the drafting of an action plan on labour inspection.
  • Help to develop new or revised regulations and tools to improve the quality, planning, monitoring and evaluation of the role of the labour inspectorate in increasing compliance with fundamental rights. 
  • Develop a sustainable training strategy for labour inspectors and support its implementation.
  • Support the National Labour Tripartite Committee and ASEZA in promoting collective bargaining and in developing new tools and services that enable them to advise and inform social partners on this issue.
  • Provide technical assistance to social partners’ organizations to improve their capacity to better serve and represent their members when engaging in workplace cooperation and collective bargaining.

  • A labour inspection action plan drafted through tripartite consultation.
  • Regulations and tools revised to improve the quality, planning and evaluation of labour inspection activities.
  • Labour inspectors trained in modern labour inspection techniques and practices.
  • Policy recommendations on how to promote sound industrial relations and collective bargaining rights drafted by the National Tripartite Labour Committee.
  • New or improved awareness raising material and services to promote sound industrial relations and collective bargaining developed and piloted by ASEZA.
  • New skills and techniques on workplace cooperation and the negotiation and conclusion of collective bargaining agreements acquired by employers’ and workers’ representatives.
