In Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley, workers are digging into the rich, orange earth to build a 25 kilometre irrigation channel, as part of the ILO’s Employment Intensive Infrastructure Programme in Lebanon. Unusually, several of the construction workers are women.

Huda is pregnant, but she is worried about how that will affect her job. Sahar helps her understand her rights as a working mother. If certain conditions are in place, the school where she works must establish a nursery for the children of its employees, and she is entitled to one hour of breastfeeding daily.

Giving child labourers a voice through music

Thousands of children in Lebanon are engaged in child labour – many in some of its worst forms. The ILO and Lebanon’s Ministry of Labour teamed up with renowned conductor and choirmaster Selim Sahab, together setting up a special choir to empower these children, and give them a voice through music. This ILO-led initiative is part of efforts to implement Lebanon’s National Action Plan to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labour.
