Sensitizing northern Lebanon Farmers on prohibiting the use of children under 16 in agricultural work in Lebanon

An ILO-led workshop will sensitize municipality officials and members of the Farmers Union in northern Lebanon on adhering to a new General Security memo prohibiting the use of children under 16 in agricultural work.

Child Labour in agriculture has been on the rise in Lebanon since the onset of the crisis in neighbouring Syria, with hundreds of Syrian refugee children in particular engaged in highly exploitative forms of child labour, especially at harvest times.

In light of this, the ILO, in coordination with the Ministry of Labour and the Farmers’ Union, is organizing a workshop in Tripoli for officials from five municipalities in north Lebanon, heads of municipality agricultural committees, Farmers’ Union members, NGO practitioners and large landowners in North Lebanon.

The workshop will introduce participants to the role of the Ministry of Labour in combating child labour, the effects hazardous agricultural work has on children’s health, and Occupational Safety and Health considerations. It will also introduce participants to the memo issued by General Security which prohibits engaging children under 16 in agricultural work in the field or in productions lines, as well as the role of General Security officers in monitoring such activity.

The workshop will take place on 26 July 2017 at the Quality Inn Hotel in Tripoli, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

It follows a similar event held in April 2017 in Lebanon’s Beqaa region.
