Worker involvement key to workplace safety in China

Explosion in northern China puts focus on workplace safety. The BBC interviews Tim De Meyer, Director of the ILO Country Office for China and Mongolia, on the tragic loss of life caused by the explosion in the port of Tianjin on 12 August 2015. He said more needs to be done to ensure workers are given the tools and support necessary to protect themselves, the public and the environment.

Decent work: An immediate response to Haiyan

Almost 6 million workers were affected when Haiyan (Yolanda) struck the Philippines in November 2013. Of these, 2.6 million workers were already in vulnerable employment and living near or at the poverty line even before the super typhoon. The ILO immediately responded with livelihood and decent work at the forefront of its recovery efforts. With the support of the Governments of Norway and Japan, the Department for International Development (DFID) UK , and the International Maritime Employers' Council (IMEC), the ILO reached out to affected communities with social protection and programmes of emergency employment, local resource-based work, skills training, and enterprise development and recovery.

Highlights of the ILO Haiyan (Yolanda) project culminating event

The ILO Emergency Employment and Livelihood Recovery Project, for Super Typhoon Haiyan locally known as Yolanda, gathered donors, partners, and beneficiaries to conclude its disaster response work with a culminating event "Strengthening Partnerships: Livelihood at the Forefront of Recovery after Haiyan (Yolanda)" on 6 August 2015. At the event participants shared key lessons and challenges in placing sustainable livelihood at the forefront of post-disaster relief, recovery, and development.
