ILO to launch reports on experiences of women migrant workers in Thailand and Malaysia

Ahead of International Migrants Day (18 December), the ILO will hold a launch event for two new reports.

BANGKOK (ILO News) - On Tuesday 13 December 2016, ahead of International Migrants Day (18 December), the ILO will hold a launch event for two new reports on the experiences of women migrants working in Thailand and Malaysia.

High Rise low pay: Experiences of migrant women in the Thai construction sector” finds pay discrimination, poor safety, unfair dismissal and marginalization are recurrent experiences for migrant women working in the Thai construction sector.

Worker, helper, auntie, maid? Working conditions and attitudes experienced by migrant domestic workers in Thailand and Malaysia” links public attitudes expressed in the media and by employers to working conditions experienced by migrant domestic workers. The study finds that media reports often links migrant workers with illegality and crime, and that this negative portrayal is reflected in employers’ fears and mistrust of the migrant domestic workers in their employ.

Members of the press are invited to the launch event on Tuesday, 13 December 2016, at the Grande Centre Point Terminal 21, Room Sukhumvit 1, C Floor, 2 Sukhumvit, Soi 19, Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok (Asok BTS Station/Sukhumvit MRT Station). Registration is from 13:30 to 14:00 and the event will run from 14:00-16:00.

The combined launch event for the studies will draw attention to important findings and recommendations from the reports. There will be a Q&A with the authors of each of the studies, which will help to further drive home the reports’ key messages. A panel discussion on how to improve the experiences of women migrant workers will provide a much needed discussion on working conditions and access to labour rights and social protection in Thailand and Malaysia.

The event will be in English with simultaneous translation into Thai for the press.
