Press release | Bangkok, Thailand | 16 June 2016
Bangkok (ILO news) – To mark International Domestic Workers Day (16 June), an advocacy website is being launched to promote the rights of domestic workers.

The website, http://nooneshouldworkthisway.org showcases portraits of domestic workers who have been physically or mentally abused by their employers, taken by the renowned photographer, Steve McCurry, with accompanying stories by journalist, Karen Emmons.

The photos are part of an advocacy project, No One Should Work This Way, which was funded by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The project aims to spread awareness of the physical and psychological abuse of domestic workers, promote their labour and human rights and encourage countries to ratify the ILO Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189)

Convention No. 189 is a landmark convention that establishes the first global standard for domestic workers. It gives them the same basic rights as other workers, including weekly days off, limits to hours of work, minimum wages, paid overtime, social security, and clear terms and conditions of employment. So far Convention No. 189 has been ratified by 22 countries, including one – the Philippines – in Asia Pacific.

Globally there are more than 67 million domestic workers, 41 per cent of whom are employed in Asia.
