  1. Promoting Sustainable Enterprises – Training course and project launch by the President of Switzerland

    6 - 9 July 2010

    From July 6-9, the ILO Office in Jakarta and the Global ILO SCORE Programme are conducting a training workshop for policy-makers and social partners “Promoting Sustainable Enterprises through Good Workplace Practices and Human Resource Management”.

  2. Workshop on Building the Capacity of MONEF - the Mongolian Employers Federation - in Preparation for Revisions to Mongolia's Labour Law

    The workshop explained the role of employers' organisations during the law revision process within the context of international labour standards.

  3. Launch of the study on “Promoting Employment-Intensive Growth in Sri Lanka: Policy Analysis of the Manufacturing and Service Sectors

    The study examines the employment effect of growth in manufacturing sector industries in Sri Lanka covering a period of 17 years from 1990 and focuses on two periods, the slow growth period of the 1990s and the period of high growth (post-2000). The study uses an integrated framework which qualifies the relative importance of the key factors determining of employment elasticity and its variations between the two time periods. The findings indicate that manufacturing sector has responded positively to policy reforms of post-1977 period in terms of growth, export orientation, productivity, profitability and employment creation.

  4. Launch of the study on “Sri Lanka’s Working Poor”

    The first ever comprehensive study on “Sri Lanka’s Working Poor will be launched on 2nd July 2010. The study examines the links between the nature of employment and the incidence of poverty and investigate in greater detail the prevalence of poverty among different classes of employed. It also examines factors other than growth and redistribution that contribute to poverty among them. This study builds on earlier analytical work commissioned by the ILO on informal employment in Sri Lanka using the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) data of 2006. That study found informal employment accounting for 65 per cent of total employment and informal employees on general earning considerably lower wages than formal employees.

    As part of our programme on promoting a rights-based approach to labour migration and encourage trade union cooperation on this subject, I am pleased to inform you that our colleagues from the trade union movement in Kuwait, KTUF – Kuwait Trade Union Federation, have kindly accepted to host a meeting in Kuwait City on 30 June – 1 July 2010. The meeting will be co-sponsored by the ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ILO/ACTRAV) and the Solidarity Centre of the AFL-CIO.

  4. Regional Workshop on Monitoring and Assessing Progress on Decent Work in Asia

    28 - 30 June 2010

    The purpose of this workshop is to help strengthen the capacity of officials from ministries of labour and national statistical offices and representatives of workers’ and employers’ organizations in developing, analyzing and monitoring indicators on decent work to enhance the impact of development policies. In addition, the discussions will provide an opportunity for participants to share knowledge and experiences on measuring decent work at the country level.

  5. Towards an ASEAN Sub-Regional Roadmap for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2016: Tripartite Consultative Review Meeting

    28 - 29 June 2010

    The purpose of the meeting is to validate the report and draft roadmap with ASEAN tripartite constituents. Tripartite support is sought prior to the presentation of the report to ASEAN Senior Labour Officials, from whom endorsement of the report and adoption of a target for eliminating the worst forms of child labour by 2016 and a time-bound roadmap towards that goal will be sought.

  6. Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Examined through Survey Methodology Meeting

    24 - 25 June 2010

    The IPEC Statistical Information and Monitoring Programme on Child Labour organised a discussion of surveys to gather data on the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC). Representatives from Bangladesh, Mongolia, Cameroon and the Philippines met and presented CSEC pilot survey results using workplace-based and household-based approaches on 24-25 June in Cebu.

    A high-level conference organized to make a public commitment to the 2016 Roadmap on the elimination of the worst forms of child labour and present it to key stakeholders in the process, including concerned public and private sector agencies, donors and development partners.

  12. The Observance of the World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL 2010) in Bangladesh. “Eliminate Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2016”

    Under the overall coordination of the Urban Informal Economy (UIE) Project of ILO, Dhaka, the 9th World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL 2010), was observed in Bangladesh in a befitting manner. The most unique part of the observation was that this year’s WDACL was observed nationally under the leadership of the Ministry of Labour and Employment in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, ILO and UNICEF. The theme for the day was “Eliminate Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2016” and the slogan was “Let’s Eliminate Worst Forms of Child Labour, Let’s Ensure Education for All Children”

  13. National Seminar on Child Labour Monitoring in Thailand

    The ILO-IPEC Project of Support for National Action to Combat Child Labour and its Worst Forms in Thailand has supported the establishment of child labour monitoring and referral mechanisms in six provinces in Thailand through a partnership with the Khon Kaen and Thammasat Universities. A two-day technical seminar will be held on 11 June 2010 to exchange experiences on this particular issue and promote the most successful models for further replication as required under the National Policy and Plan to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Thailand (2009-2014).

  14. Presentation of Good Practices and Lessons Learned - IPEC Thailand closing seminar

  15. Financial Education Validation TOT Workshop, Jakarta

    3 - 7 June 2010

    The overall objective is to improve the knowledge of migrant workers and their families in financial literacy. To reach this objective, the ILO, through ILO/Japan Project on Managing Cross-border Movement of Labour in Southeast Asia will strengthen the capacities of NGOs/CBO’s or local government offices to provide financial literacy training to migrant workers communities and improve financial goals of migrant communities, which particular focus will be given to empowering women and young people to engage in dignified work and self-employment.

  16. 99th International Labour Conference

    2 - 18 June 2010

    The 99th International Labour Conference (ILC), the annual gathering of the ILO's global membership, opened in Geneva on June 2. Items on the agenda include the global financial and jobs crisis, the Global Jobs Pact, a new labour standard on HIV/AIDS, the treatment of domestic workers, and the situation in Myanmar.
