6th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour

The 6th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour is scheduled to take place on 26 and 27 November 2013 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam. The ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour (AFML) is an open platform for review, discussion and exchange of best practices and ideas between governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations, and civil society stakeholders on key issues facing migrant workers in South-East Asia, and develop recommendations to advance the implementation of the principles of the ASEAN Declaration on Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers.

The annual ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour (AFML) is an open platform for review, discussion and exchange of good practices and ideas between governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations, and civil society stake-holders on key issues facing women and men migrant workers in South-East Asia, and develop recommendations to advance the implementation of the principles of the ASEAN Declaration on Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers.

The Forum provides opportunity to share stakeholder activities to implement the various Recommendations from AFML meetings as well as the experience of developing the draft ASEAN Instrument on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers.

Each year the AFML is hosted by the current chair of the ASEAN with secretariat support from the ASEAN Secretariat, and inputs from ILO, IOM, UN Women and the Taskforce for ASEAN Migrant Workers. Some countries choose to hold national preparatory meetings with tripartite partners and civil society. Thus far, national tripartite preparatory meetings have been scheduled as follows:

Previous Forums have focused their discussion around the ASEAN Declaration, carrying themes such as:
  • ASEAN Declaration on Migrant Workers: Achieving its Commitment” (2nd AFML)
  • Enhancing Awareness and Information Services to Protect the Rights of Migrant Workers” (3rd ASEAN Forum) 
  • Development of a public campaign to promote understanding, rights and dignity of migrant workers in countries of destination; Return and reintegration and development of sustainable alternatives in countries of origin” (4th ASEAN Forum)
