“We share the same values with ILO… values of equity and human rights”, said Dr Akram Ali Eltom, Director of Partnerships at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM), speaking at a side event to the 100th International Labour Conference (ILC).
The event, “Give effect to Recommendation No. 200 and partner with the Global fund”, was organized by the ILO Programme on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work on 2nd June 2011. Dr Eltom welcomed partnership with what he called ILO’s “unique constituencies” of governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations. He thanked the ILO tripartite constituencies and Secretariat for making a significant contribution in the global solution to tackle HIV, including through promoting public-private partnerships (PPPs). Dr Eltom made a comprehensive presentation on the Global Fund, highlighting the role of multi-stakeholders and emphasized the Fund’s focus on strengthening public-private partnerships. Dr Eltom’s presentation was followed by an interactive session during which he answered questions of ILC delegates.
Mr Assane Diop, Executive Director of the ILO for Social Protection Sector, stressed on the need for increased resources for strengthening HIV and AIDS programmes in the world of work and expressed his support for strengthening collaboration between ILO constituents and the Global Fund. The event was chaired by Mr Juan Felipe Hunt Ortiz, Officer in Charge, Department of Partnerships and Development Cooperation (PARDEV). Mr François Eyraud, Director, Labour Protection Department (PROTRAV) - Safework, Working Conditions, AIDS, International Migration - gave the opening remarks. Mr Afsar Syed Mohammad, Senior Technical Specialist ILO/AIDS highlighted the ILO approach of supporting constituents in accessing GFATM grants and partnership of ILO/AIDS with GFATM.
The event provided an opportunity for ILO constituents to know more about the GFATM and discuss ways to address some of the challenges met in accessing Global Fund grants.
