Women’s Economic Empowerment project in Somalia

The project on women economic empowerment is a joint initiative between UN Women and ILO with the support of UN Women and Swedish International Cooperation Agency (SIDA) promotes women’s economic empowerment through enhancing their entrepreneurial skills.

Its main objective is to enhance women’s economic advancement and to foster an enabling environment for women entrepreneurship. This will be achieved through interventions such as entrepreneurial skills training in alternative sectors, resources to compete in markets and to have access to economic institutions.

The initiative will also support women’s voices and representation through a consultative mechanism intended to provide a forum for business, civil society representative to provide an enabling business environment for women. This initiative is committed to the goal of women’s economic empowerment, economically empowering women as a win-win situation benefiting not only women, but society as a whole.

Specific Objectives:

  • Creating an improved enabling environment supporting women’s economic empowerment
  • Increasing capacity of women’s associations to address barriers to employment and economic empowerment
  • Increasing access to skills and financial/non-financial business development services to improve income-generating capacity, productivity and competitiveness
