Revision of standards for informal economy statistics: An African regional meeting in preparation for the 21st ICLS planned in Abidjan.

As a prelude to the 21st International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS), the International Labour Organization (ILO) is organizing an African regional meeting to review statistical standards for measuring the informal economy from September 13 to 15, 2022 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

The meeting will be preceded by a capacity building workshop on child labour statistics on September 12 and followed by a capacity building workshop on social protection statistics on September 16, 2022.

Participants in this meeting come from national statistical offices in more than 30 African countries. The African Union, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the United Nations and AFRISTAT have also been invited to participate to this African regional meeting in preparation for the 21st ICLS. The meeting will be held in a hybrid format (presential and online).

The ICLS (International Conference of Labour Statisticians) is an instrument for the standardization of labour statistics hosted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) every five years at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. In October 2023, the ILO will convene the 21st ICLS. This time, the Conference will consider and discuss the possible adoption of a draft set of international standards for statistics on the informal economy. Once adopted, countries will be called upon to incorporate these standards in order to obtain an appropriate information base for describing and understanding the informal economy, and to facilitate the development of appropriate evidence-based policies.
