The realization of decent work in Global supply chains: ILO’s role is recognized

The President of the Workers’ Group, Luc Cortebeeck, looks back over the results of the 105th Session of the International Labour Conference, and reflects in particular on ILO’s role in the realization of decent work in global supply chains. Mr Cortebeeck also sets out the position of the Workers’ Group on the cases of violations of international labour standards, the subject of decent work for peace and resilience and the impact of the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization.

325th session of the ILO Governing Body: What were the results for the workers?

The violation of labour rights in Qatar, Guatemala, Fiji and Myanmar was one of the items on the agenda of the 325th Session of the Governing Body that took place in Geneva from 2nd to 12th November 2015. In this interview, the President of the Workers’ Group of the Governing Body, Mr Luc Cortebeeck, reviews several agenda items, including the global refugee crisis and its labour market implications, and climate change, which is due to be discussed at the Paris Conference in December 2015.

International Labour Conference 2015: What were the results for the workers?

The 104th session of the International Labour Conference was characterized by the Committee on the Application of Standards resuming its work, examining 24 individual cases of violations of international labour standards. In this interview, President of the Workers’ Group, Luc Cortebeeck, shares the workers’ perspective on the work of that Committee. Mr Cortebeeck also talks about the other issues discussed at this session, such as the transition from the informal to the formal economy, social protection, the discussions about small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the creation of decent and productive jobs, as well as the Director-General’s report on the Future of Work.

In this interview, President of the Workers’ Group Luc Cortebeeck discusses the outcomes achieved at this session, in particular on the issue of the right to strike. He also talks about the solutions the trade unions have in mind for the protection of vulnerable workers and the expectations of the Workers’ Group for the forthcoming discussions on transitioning from the informal to the formal economy due to take place at the International Labour Conference in June 2015.
