India: Campaign on the Promotion of Ratification of ILO Core Conventions on Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining

Following the expansion of the ACTRAV / Norway Project “Trade Unions for Social Justice” in the six States of India namely Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and of its objectives, the Joint Action Forum (JAF) comprising of National Trade Unions i.e. AITUC, BMS, CITU, HMS, INTUC, UTUC, AIUTUC, AICCTU, TUCC from the State of Assam is launching its State campaign for promotion of ratification of C.87 and C.98 in Guwahati, Assam on 25th November 2014. The campaign launch event will be held on 25th November 2014 at Guwahati. The event will be inaugurated by senior trade union and political leaders from the state of Assam and will be attended by over 500 people.

Thereafter, a series of caravan campaign-cum-street corner meetings will be organized in the six districts of the Assam namely Kamrup Metro, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Darrang & Kamrup Rural from 25th – 28th November 2014. The major objective of the Zatha (Mass public procession) campaign cum street corner meetings is to create mass awareness on need and importance of ratification of ILO Core Conventions C. 87 & C. 98. The zatha also aims to reach over 50,000 workers and general public through signature campaign seeking their support for CLS ratification campaign. The State JAF team on completion of the Zatha will also be submitting a Memorandum to the Hon’ble Prime Minister through the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam.

The above campaign will be conducted by the Assam State JAF leaders from the 9 National Trade Union Organizations along with their zonal and district level leaders in coordination with the ILO/ACTRAV project.
