Employers from the IGAD region launch the Confederation of IGAD Employers (CIE)

The ILO Bureau for Employers’ Activities (ACT/EMP) supported the negotiations and the launch of the Confederation of IGAD Employers (CIE)

The Confederation of IGAD Employers (CIE) was launched in Nairobi Kenya on 11 December 2019. Employers Organizations from Djibouti, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda signed the By-Laws in the presence of the Horn of Africa Confederation of Trade Unions (HACTU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and ILO Representatives. Other Employers Organizations, who are also members of IGAD- namely Kenya and Somalia are yet to sign.

CIE has a vision to enhance growth and development through strong economic integration among member employers’ organizations as a voice that echo and serve interests within the context of international labour standards. Its mission includes to serve, protect and advocate for the right of employers for prosperous, developed economies of IGAD member states.

Djiboutian Employers were elected as the President, with South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda Employers as 1st, 2nd and3rd Vice Presidents. Ethiopian Employers will act as Secretary General and will host CIE in their premises in Addis Ababa. The negotiating process was led by Ethiopian Employers, who took advantage of several ILO organized sub-regional activities to discuss with sister employers’ organizations over the course of the year ending with the successful launch.
