The Federation for Egyptian Industries (FEI) in partnership with the ILO launched on Tuesday December 10th the Egypt chapter of the Global Business and Disability Network, referred to as Egypt Business and Disability Network (EBDN). This launch comes after years of preparatory work and comes at a time of renewed momentum for diversity at the workplace.

The Egypt Business and Disability Network includes a variety of multinational and national enterprises, including Al Ahram Beverages, Americana Group, Coca Cola, Giza Systems, Microsoft, Orange and Raya. The network also includes non-corporate members such as the Ministry of Communication and a new large charitable Investment Fund (Ataa). Representatives attending the launch shared good practices and lessons learned, committed to exploring innovative policies and approaches, and all highlighted the benefits of including people with disabilities as part of a diverse workforce. The Global Business and Disability Network is a unique employer-led initiative that works to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in workplaces around the world and globally counts on the support of 28 Global companies, 9 not-for profit organisations and 29 national Business and Disability Networks.

The Federation of Egyptian Industries, highlighted the clear business benefits of employing people with disabilities and the valuable contributions they bring workplaces of all kinds stressing that employees with diverse experiences have different approaches to problem-solving and can increase a company’s capacity for innovation. FEI also highlighted that tapping into the large workforce of people with disability could be a way of overcoming labour shortages in certain industrial sectors.

The Egypt Business and Disability Network is just one of the activities the ILO supports the FEI with and is testimony of the strong partnership between both institutions. This support to the FEI is provided through the United Nation’s “Jobs and Skills for persons with disabilities with a focus on ICT-based Solutions” project, a joint development cooperation programme implemented by the ILO, UNDP, and the Egyptian ICT Trust Fund. The Federation of Egyptian Industries - Egypt’s employers’ organization - represents 20 industrial chambers and 60,000 industrial enterprises, accounting for more than seven million workers and 20% of the national economy.
